Making Sydney a better place to live

Origins

In 2002 the Warren Centre for Advanced Engineering at Sydney University,  released its groundbreaking report Towards a City of Cities thus completing its Sustainable Transport for Sustainable Cities project.  Summaries of that project's report are available for free download.A key finding was that over the last two decades the rate of growth of travel in Greater Sydney has been double the rate of growth of population.however this has now levelled off
Another finding of the report is that a totally new, integrated approach to planning is necessary for Greater Sydney, one that takes into account transport, infrastructure, land use, the environment and community needs.

Actions

In March 2007 Friends released the Sydney Integrated Transport Strategy and in 2009 released FROGS rail plan for Sydney,  Both plans calls for a phased implementation of transport infrastructure over a 40 year horizon requiring the same expenditure as currently planned (albeit with revised priorities).

Who is involved?

Thirty eight Foundation Members from State/Local Government, private industry and community organisations, established 10,000 Friends of Greater Sydney Limited, a not-for profit company on January 3rd 2006.  On-going funding comes from Member organisations and more importantly from all those in the community who join and become Friends of Greater Sydney.
